What has your nutrient management career path looked like so far?

My involvement in nutrient management started as an inquisitive farmer, wanting to understand more about how we could optimise the use of nutrients on our dairy fam. This saw me complete the intermediate and advanced nutrient management short course papers at Massey University. As I transitioned into farm business consulting I wanted to be assured that my knowledge and understanding was at a high level and stayed current, this led  me into the Nutrient Management Adviser Certification Programme.

What do you see as the benefits to becoming certified?

The benefits of being a Certified Nutrient Management Adviser flow to both yourself and the clients you work with. You have the confidence that your own knowledge and understanding around nutrient management is sound, and you keep current through the ongoing process of continued professional development. Clients benefit from this and can be assured that your advice is of a high standard.

Describe to us your ideal working day…

The ideal working day starts early, getting a couple of jobs done on the home farm before heading out to meet with farmers. I find the process of working with farmers and their teams is hugely rewarding. For me, it’s equally enjoyable whether it’s working through some of the more routines aspects of farm and business management to develop good plans, or looking into complex problems to help find innovative solutions. At the end of the day, heading home and having made a positive impact is really satisfying.
